This project teaches students about international human rights law, how governments violate these rights, and international governance that reports on HR violations. Students may code, write letters about, and/or do public presentations on HR violations; and they may also work with various local groups to assist and empower marginalized groups.
Past student projects included raising money for the Starfish Scholarship (that goes to NWACC students who were in the foster care system) and building bed frames for children without beds with the group Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

Human Rights by
The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1945) was a response to the atrocities surrounding the Second World War. Many believe this Declaration resulted from a synthesis of three thousand years of Western (Judeo-Christian) philosophy, religion and culture. Now more than 60 years later, we ask, "have the principles outlined in the Declaration been realised in the way in which human rights are recognised and protected in today's world?" Several authors have responded to the challenge of addressing this question. Their responses are contained in the seven chapters of this text. This book examines Islamic, secular, animist, etc. societies in its search for potential advocates of human rights progress. Essential to any progress will be the willingness of individuals, faith organisations and governments to subordinate self-interests for the sake of the vulnerable human being. Until this happens, the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights will remain a concept, yet to be realised.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. A burgeoning human rights movement followed, yielding many treaties and new international institutions and shaping the constitutions and laws of many states. Human Rights: An Introduction is an important text that provides a comprehensive overview of human rights and related issues from a social science perspective. First, this book does more than discuss theory, it uses case studies and personal testimonies in the debate. Human rights as an area of academic interest cannot be easily divorced from human rights struggles and the reality of contemporary conditions. Second, the book is aimed at what is an emerging and growing cross-disciplinary field of study. Human rights issues are increasingly coming to the fore in a number of academic debates. Whereas the study of human rights has traditionally been included in departments of law, international relations and philosophy, a number of courses are now being set up in departments of sociology and anthropology.
