Turning the Page on Digital Accessibility

A Practical Framework for Improving Library Websites

The Report

Findings

Scope: Springshare reviewed our website's header/footer, homepage, and 10 representative guides.

Methodology: We selected guides based on nominations from all librarians, focusing on pages with high usage, common elements, and known issues.

Overall Results: Our pages were praised for being “well-formed,” with high accessibility scores in the 90s. The review assessed:

  • Content clarity & readability
  • HTML structure & ARIA labels
  • Features & color contrast

Identified Issues: Despite the high scores, the report found:

  • 15 Errors
  • 29 Alerts
  • 6 Best Practice Issues
  • Common problems included missing alt text, incorrect font sizing, and improper headings.

Image example of long alternative text found on our A-Z Database list, specifically for Arkansas State Traveler Project databases. Alternative text should be 125 characters or less, which this text is just over that character limit. Although it is up to our discretion, we decided to reassess that text.
